Abstract Expressionism - Work on Paper
This collection of work, on loan from the Metropolitan, comprises 75 works by 22 of the most representative figures of American abstract expressionism, all carried out between 1938 and 1969. Most of the artists resided in New York around the time of the outbreak of WW2 and, horrified by the event, began to question the place of humanity in the world and look for a form of expression in tone with the dark times they were living through. Represented, among others, are Jackson Pollock, Elaine de Kooning, Robert Motherwell and Mark Rothko.

Suburbano
Suburbano, formed by Luis Mendo and Bernardo Fuster, have been together for 20 years and have made nine albums and 39 soundtracks for movies by various contemporary Spanish directors. Caring little for fame, Suburbano play their lucid, anarchic jazz mixed with pop and other influences with joyful abandon. Their recent album, 'Veinte años y un día' ('Twenty Years and a Day') is a compilation of many of their well-known themes and they celebrate their 20th in the Café Central accompanied by Elena Robles on bass.

Dogstar
There are doubtless many household pets who can play the guitar and sing backing vocals better than heart-throb Keanu Reeves, but as long as he keeps turning up, then tickets for his sub-garage hobby band will continue to sell by the shed load. If you brave either of these two gigs, go for the one at Blitz, which at least has the virtue of being a genuine rock venue (rather than a dog kennel). Shibuya's Kokaido is a down-at-heel public hall with acoustics guaranteed to amplify the screams of the inevitable hordes of lovelorn screaming teens.
