Orchestra Sinfónica Portuguesa

This is the first exhibition from the Joyce and Ted Strauss Collection, which is one of the premier collections of fine art photographs in America. Mizuko Uchida (piano) and Atsuko Koga (flute) are two young Japanese musicians with numerous international prizes under their belts and have put together a delightful programme of Bach, Godard, Suzuki, Ibert, Brahms and Reinecke in the Kulturhaus Mitte. Combined with a meal in one of the Berlin 'Art Mile's' numerous good restaurants nearby, this could provide a satisfying and economical alternative to the usual tourist thing.

The very idea of Club New York triggers thoughts good and bad. In its prior incarnation, back when Times Square was an interesting sleaze zone and not a sanitized shopping mall, this was the legendary trannie hustler bar Sally's II, a major inspiration for the folks at Jackie 60, among others. It was closed down as part of the city's war on non-tourist-friendly culture. Still, the fact that the place has reopened as a club has made more than a few cynics smile a little. Granted, Club New York caters to a more mainstream, straight, well-behaved crowd than did Sally's. But much of the layout (including the fabulous circular bar) has been saved.

Hi/Lo Film Festival

Proof that great films needn't be linked with great finance, the 4th annual Hi/Lo Film Festival is a celebration of high concept cinematic art made with little or no money. From its meagre beginnings in a North Beach screening room, the festival is now presented in the cosy 500-seat Victoria Theatre. The panoply of featured films represent the antithesis of multiplex blockbusters, and range from animations, short narratives and abstract imaginative explorations, to micro-features, documentaries, and uncategorisable creations. The common thread these mostly Bay Area-made films share is their high concepts and their shoestring budgets.

The galleries, resource center and two workshop rooms of this museum, a branch of the Smithsonian Institute's sprawling organization of museums and research institutes, occupies two floors of the grand rotunda in the exquisite old U.S. Customs House. Located just around the corner from Battery Park and the Ellis Island ferry, it offers displays based on a permanent collection of documents and artifacts that offer valuable insights into the realities of Native American history. Exhibitions are thoughtfully explained, usually by Native Americans. Of special interest is 'All Roads Are Good,' which reflects the personal choices of storytellers, weavers, anthropologists and tribal leaders. Only 500 of the collection's one million objects are on display, which is one reason that, despite the building's lofty proportions, the museum seems surprisingly small. A main branch, on the Mall in Washington, D.C., will open in 2002.

Sexton's constant touring and dynamic live show is starting to win him a highly devoted core of fans, and his dramatic, funny and lovingly crafted folk-rock songs deserve it. Like most of his recordings, his most recent album 'Wonder Bar' is a hit-and-miss affair, but live he sets the songs afire with a voice that is unmatched in contemporary pop and that's part of his appeal. Once you hear him sing, you want to repeat the pleasure over and over.

Originally the monastic
church of St Mary Overie, this splendid but little-visited building
became an Anglican cathedral in 1905. The first church on the site may
date from as early as the seventh century; the oldest parts of the
present building are twelfth-century. After the Reformation, the church
fell into disrepair and was partially used as a bakery and a pigsty.
Heavy-handed Victorian restoration added to the fascinating mix of
architectural styles, including a fine Gothic choir. John Harvard,
benefactor of Harvard University, was born in Southwark in 1607 and
baptised in the church; more recently, the John Harvard Chapel was the
setting for the film The Slipper and the Rose. The cathedral is
currently in the stages of an ambitious Lottery-funded millennium
project, which will involve, among other things, adding a two-storey
wing containing a refectory and teaching library, a new entrance to the
north of the cathedral, the building of a new Visitors' Centre and
exhibition about the history of the cathedral and surrounding area.
Work is due to be completed at the end of 2000 but the cathedral is
open as usual in the meantime.

DJ Food, a collaborative project involving four DJs who draw on diverse talents to expand the horizons of electronic music, will headline at a Cinetrip Vizimozi party. DJ Food tends to acid jazz, but they also play a wide range of beats and sometimes almost beatless music. They'll perform at Budapest's best-known party, where dancers splash in the pools of the Rudas Baths while DJs spin and silent movies show on the big screen.
