Under the baton of Pierre Boulez, the Cleveland Orchestra takes on Ravel’s surreal one-act opera ‘L’Enfant et Les Sortilèges’, as part of a programme celebrating impressionist composers. The opera has a bratty child torment his mother and then get his come-uppance when he’s assaulted by the furniture and even the maths book he’d refused to open to do his homework. From there it turns really weird as he ventures outside and gets similar treatment in the garden, until redeeming himself in the eyes of the animal kingdom by rescuing a squirrel. The programme also features Ravel’s ‘La Pavane pour une infante défunte’ and three works by Debussy.

Widely regarded as one of Germany’s finest and most exciting contemporary artists, Hanne Darboven has worked in a wide range of media, including photography, film, collage and unique hand- and type-written texts. Brit electro-popsters Saint Etienne are back with a vengeance, whizzing around the globe in between studio sessions for their next album, due out in the year 2000. The only band in the world who could come up with a song titled ‘Kofi Annan’ (no wonder their ‘Like a Motorway’ is the call sign for the news on Yugoslavia’s rebellious B-92 radio station, closed down by Slobodan Milosevic) are releasing their single ‘Lover Plays the Bass’ all over the place, in between a US album and a fan-club release. And In the middle of all of that, they’ve even managed a New York date to keep the college crowd sweet on them.

These are two short films by photographer and documentary-maker Raymond Depardon. ‘Muriel Leferle’ follows a Paris prostitute through interviews with magistrates after her arrest on suspicion of stealing a car. She talks lovingly of fast cars, but insists she couldn’t steal one as she can’t drive, and, being HIV positive, boasts of her good health. ‘Paroles d’Appelés’ (made for the Ministry of Defence AIDS prevention programme) is an interesting series of snapshots of young men on military service expressing their views on AIDS. (In French.)

From the streets of Guadalajara, Mexico, come Maná, the most successful Latin-rock band ever. Originally named ‘Sombrero Verde’ in the late-1970s, Maná found fame with their second release, 1992’s ‘Dónde jugarán los niños?’ (’Where will the Children Play?’), which by 1997 had sold three and a half million copies worldwide. Maná’s fresh, eclectic mix of pop-rock with reggae and Afro-Latin rhythms and pro-ecological lyrics has now earned them a huge following throughout the Americas and Europe, several awards from Billboard and MTV as well as a Grammy.

Singer-songwriter Vonda Shepard enjoyed a unique career breakthrough, shooting to fame via the hit television series ‘Ally McBeal’ instead of through radio airplay or relentless touring. Her early career took a downturn after the flop of her second album, the 1992 ‘The Radical Light, Shepard’. She then turned to the LA club network where, spotted by TV producer David E Kelly, she signed for the comedy-drama. Be prepared for an audience of bland music lovers shouting ‘We Love Vonda’.

Britain’s favourite chemist is now making inroads into the Japanese market. Its first branch in Japan opened in Tokyo in August, and since then expansion has been proceeding apace. The third and largest branch to date opened on the exclusive Ginza crossing in October. So far, the cool, modern Boots style - a million miles away from that of Japan’s traditional pharmacies - is proving phenomenally popular, although UK ex-pats will be disappointed that Boots’ own-brand medicines are not on sale because of stringent Japanese drugs laws.

These modern masters of swing play together for two weeks in Barcelona: Ximo Tébar is one of the finest local jazz guitarists around, while Joey DeFrancesco is probably the best Hammond organ player of his generation anywhere in the world, and Idris Muhammed is an internationally known jazz drummer. When playing together, they prefer to call themselves the Champs, and they haven’t had any complaints about the title so far. Make sure to book ahead for what promises to be a popular series of high quality sets.
